Wellness & Mental Health

In response to the active shooting occurred at UNLV on December, 6th, 2023, our Executive Director and Founder Brissa Arana, who is a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist, created a special Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Group to provide no cost, bilingual emotional support to Hispanic students and their families who were directly involved in the tragic event. The group was directed and facilitated by Brissa herself, with the collaboration of fellow psychotherapist Pedro Navarro, CSW-I, Board Certified Chaplain Daniel Leal, and Certified Mental Health First Aider and PLV Founder Rosy Aguirre De Garcia, who assisted with individual psychosocial interventions as needed. This group was held weekly from December, 2023 through March 2024, and biweekly from April through May 2024. Beneficiaries were able to receive free Trauma-Informed Psychological First Aid, Emotional Processing, Trauma Psychoeducation, Mindfulness Techniques, Safety Training, Suicide Prevention Education, and Expressive Art Therapy for stress management and anxiety reduction associated with trauma. Students were also provided with other resources and referred to permanent therapeutic services. The group was endorsed by The Resiliency and Justice Center, with the support of valued Community Partners such as The Youth Voice of Nevada, Make the Road Nevada, Mi Familia Vota, Community Services of Nevada (CSNV), Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention, and LVMPD Office of Community Engagement. This group was the precedent for what now stands as PLV’s Mental Health Awareness Program.
